The construction of masculinity: The case of a bricklayer

Authors

Abstract

This article offers an examination of the meanings, functions, values, attributes, and daily practices associated with the dominant model of masculinity in rural contexts. From the perspective of gender and masculinities studies, the research focuses on construction workers (bricklayers) over 50 years of age. Adopting a qualitative methodology, we obtained the narrative of one worker and reconstructed his life history. We found that the construction of masculinities is a process that begins at an early age and is influenced by factors on the personal, family, community, and workplace levels. The life story also addresses the continuities, ruptures, and ambivalences of the hegemonic model of masculinity within the particular context of the subject in question, who understands masculinity in adult life in terms of employment success, economic provision, and participation in the world of paid work.
